Do no one playing the multiplayer mode?

I really, really love this game!
But it looks like no one uses the multiplayer mode. All regions are empty and there is no one joining a game
I had to choose between a Slitherine- and a steam mode ( i clicked on steam, because i bought the game on Steam). Are the two modes different?
