Master of Magic: Two Questions

1. Is there a way to select who your opponents are? Seems like a lot of games have that and it would be simple option to have. I would sure love the ability to choose who I'm playing against especially if I want to avoid certain wizards that I think are overpowering
2. In my latest playthrough I was doing well (I thought) except that I played as the Bird wizard with just Life magic and I selected the Trolls. Problem is - I can't find any way to deal with flying creatures. In previous games I think I always selected Nature magic just for the sole reason of getting the Web spell. Is there some other way I'm not aware of for dealing with flying creatures?
