WotR Lancastrians

I have about 600 points of WotR Lancastrians. Beautiful army from the DBM days. I'd like to bring it up to an 800 point army. Looking for suggestions about what to build and how to use it. I'm thinking maxing out the bowmen and filling most of the rest of the points with billmen and a few dismounted MAA. I'm not sure about the stakes, but they would be easy to add if needed. I'm thinking this army benefits from the speed of the longbowmen moving about so am uncertain about the utility of the stakes. What other things have folks found useful in this army. I have a few Irish LF. Am wondering about whether I should consider any mounted at all. Have also thought about some spearmen, or perhaps a Scots ally with a substantial number of spear.

Thoughts?

I'd say keep some mounted and add some pike if you haven't already. Apart from that I've found those stakes to be a right buggery to my Ghilman and lancers/knights.

Max out on the longbow but try and have enough Billmen to put one BG between the bows forget the mounted IMO and don't bother with the stakes use the points for longbows.

If you pop over to my website (URL below) and go to the Army Lists section you'll find a number of WotR lists on the Storm of Arrows page, and there is another on the Opponents page as well that I played at the IWF.

Stakes aren't needed, but can be useful when starting out with the army.

I could be wrong on this but aren't pike only available to us Yorkists?

I'm building an 800 point Yorkist army at present and decided to have one mounted unit, the Northern Border light horse. I don't expect them to do great things but having them might be handy.

I went for a fair number of longbow, in 8s for more punch but also made sure not to neglect the billmen. It was after all primarily a "melee army" historically; battles were not won by shooting duels but by hand to hand fighting. Heavily armoured, superior men at arms / billmen seem just too expensive so I expect I'll eventually run them in 6s of armoured superior, maybe even armoured average with a commander in the front for when the hand to hand fighting starts. Northern Border spearmen which are available to both sides are quite useful IMO; cheap filler but you can have enough of them to make them worthwhile and they aren't dross.

Don't really see the point of kerns as longbow should be able to take care of most difficult terrain situations. I have toyed with fielding the combination of Warwick and Clarence which I assume would be classed as nominally Lancastrian as that lets me use troops in Yorkist liveries but also field my crossbows. The Lancastrian army list is IMO slightly the better than the Yorkist and has better options.

The good bit is you can add things to it yourself over time :) So if you find any links on painting etc, have any tips or any army lists you can post them there.

Links are the most easy to do - its just this syntax:
