Specifically, I'm looking for a game that combines the strategic depth of turn-based gameplay with the grand-scale battles characteristic of the Total War franchise. Could you recommend any titles that fit this description?"

I too am hoping that FoG Kingdoms fits the role. It appears that it will. the main difference being that Medieval Total War's turn based campaign is punctuated by RTS (but pausable) battles while the FoG battles are turn based. Looking at FoG Empires as an example you can see how this is played out an ancient setting by watching videos on Youtube, etc. My main concern now is that, having heard nothing on this game's development for a great longness of time, I'm wondering if this program is soon going to be permanently sidelined.

For those who come across this and are not aware, Kingdoms will release soon, but before it does there is a pretty interesting Twitch preview and discussion panel of the period on June 4th on the Slitherine channel. I will definitely be watching! ~CC
