dropping back stands

had this happen a lot in a game today and I can't find anything about it in the movement section, if you are doing a normal advance and your move would cause you to move through friendly troops, and your not lights, can you drop back stands?

Seems like auto contration for the undrilled boys, so not sure we did that right.

I can find the following:

Evade Moves: ..p67..evading troops get 1 base width sideways shift & can drop bases back

Rout Moves: ..would be same...

We did this during normal moves to get past friendly and sometimes enemy troops. Was it legal? I know p45 says you can shift 1/2 base width to avoid friendly troops...

The short answer as I see it is, "No, dropping back bases (contracting) can not be done automatically during normal movement without reference to the Simple and Complex Moves chart (p42).

Shifting (p45) can include shifting up to half a base width to avoid terrain or friendly troops if one front corner moves at least 1 MU.

While it is also called contracting, "dropping back one file" is allowed when charging in order to avoid friendly troops (p54). This contraction during the Impact Phase does not require a CMT. Evade rules (p67) also allow some shifting and moving bases to the rear. However neither of these options is available during normal movement in the Maneuver Phase.

hmmm it appears thos Dacians should have taken a little more time to show up in that battle. Ended up very congested with units getting in each others way throughout the whole game. On the upside we are checking the rules less each game so we are getting a better handle on the rules :)

Also the closest game we have had in attrition points ever, only 2 points difference when the game ended.

Rampage this year

Ian Stwart with 14 battlegroups loses 13AP and has to pass a rout test with an already FRGed BG to survive ... he does

Peter Cross on the other side with 13BG loses 12 AP and has to survive a test for shot at with an already FRGed BG to survive ... he does

Result 10 all draw !!!

The closest game I have seen yet!!
