moving into overlap

Ran into a situation in our last game which I wanted to clarify
RR
RR
GGC
GGC

R= Roman, G=Galatian, C= Companions

My galatians hit the romans in a charge, during the manouver phase I moved my companions into the overlap position shown.
During the next roman turn the roman wantd to move his lights into overlap on ths same side as my companions, which would have resulted in my companions and his lights being in front base contact.
I said he couldnt just move in he would have to charge me since I was already there as an overlap, if I wasnt there he could have moved in, also he cant charge me with light foot.
He thought you could just move into an overlap as I did during my turn.

In the end we agreed the lights could not move into overlap. we did this correctly didn't we?

I think what you told your opponent was 100% right on the two grounds you mention ... you have to charge enemy troops to attempt to contact them except if it's a corner to corner overlap contact (as in the case of your companions) and light foot can't charge unbroken non-skirmishers!

The paragraph in the rules on moving into contact as an overlap contains editing mistakes. See the Errata.

What the rules were supposed to say is that you can only move into overlap if you do not move into any other kind of combat. In your case the LF would have had to charge the cavalry (which is forbidden in the open).
