Fortified Camps?

I'm just being lazy here (well I might as well admit it upfront!).
Is there a list anywhere of which armies have obligatory Fortified Camps in the books so far?

My guess is we are talking about most of the (current) Roman lists:
Early Republican
Mid Republican
Later Republican
Principate
but not Dominate (odd ... why not? or is the period covered by the list long enough to fall outside the period when Roman armies stopped fortifying their camps as standard drill-book practice?)

But are there any others?
I can see a sort of justification for the Viking list (in 'Wolves from the Sea' anyway) and even the Later Mycenaean list and possibly the Burgundian Ordonnance list, but none of these are really as clear cut as the Roman example as far as 'obligation' goes.

Also - minor point - if a cavalry unit fails to roll a 6 upon attacking a fortified camp does it eventually have to break off and fall back, like it would against other non-skirmishers?

Many thanks (in anticipation)
Mark

Why don't the 'Dominate' period have fortified camps?
There are numerous examples in Ammianus and other Late Roman authors works of the Romans having fortified camps, and although Vegetius states they had all but forgotten they knew how to make them in his time, this was him railing against the 'barbarisation' of the Romans and making up tales to illustrate how this led to bad practice, rather than reflecting the reality of the situation.

They have the option. The slackers, and most wargamers won't bother, as its hard work, they haven't got one or found something else to spend the points on

12 years in the army taught me quite a few things. One of which was don't dig unless you have to.

I'd be very loyal to my general who didn't make me build a fortification everywhere I went. I might be dead, but I'd be loyal.

I'd be a bit more loyal to the one that kept me alive, by making me dig when I though I didn't have to. We always dug in.

I'd be intensly loyal to a general who insisted a fortified camp was nearby. I could then run there for safety if we got beat, and I know that my hard earned army pay and salvaged loot was also going to be protected!!!

Never trust a general, they normally have other more important motives than your wellbeing.

 Its a shame we did away with the looting, problem is most of the areas we are interested in these days have already been looted by our ancestors in arms, oh well. A low daily rate of pay for an ungrateful nation it is

Conrad who needs a fortified camp if all your enemies are down with your arrows in them.

No chance of visiting Britcon then?

 Very true and very possible with FOG.

Sadly, no. I might be back just in time but I have a lot of things to sort out.
