Never played the game, bust just bought rulebook and Legions Triumphant.
How many points do people field for a starter army?
I've written a starter list for about 500 points any comments or criticism welcome.
Principate Roman before 218 AD

C in C Field Commander 50

Sub Commander Field Commander 50

Legionaries Veterans 6 bases 84

Legionaries Newbies 4 bases 40

Legionaries Newbies 4 bases 40

Auxiliary Foot 4 bases 36

Cavalry Superior 4 bases 68

Cavalry Average 4 bases 52

Auxiliary Archers 4 bases 28

Auxiliary Archers 4 bases 28

Light Bolt-Shooter 2 bases 34

Camp 24

Total 519

I'm a little bit special needs so apologies if I have missed something blatantly obvious from the rules or FAQs.
Also a couple of questions

Do people put a centurian, signifier and musician into each battle group?

Commanders, same base size as cavalry?

Many thanks

commanders for 15mm are on 40 by 40 bases (though if obvious cavalry might help for other systems?)

not sure the artillery is worth it? it seems pretty specilised? also the lower grade troops generally work better in the bigger battle groups, higher quality can be better in smaller groups

hope this helps others with more games under thier belt might provide deeper insight?

What do people normally field points wise?

The usual standard is 650 points for a 5 foot by 3 foot game and 800 points for a 6 foot by 4 foot game.

If playing at 600 points on a 6' x 4' in 15mm, using 600 point starter armies, don't let your opponent play Parthians.

Field commanders are basically only worth it for flank marches, which the Romans shouldn't be doing. Try replacing them with an inspired commander and a troop commander or three troop commanders.

Second the comment on ditching the artillery.

650 and 800 are the most common sizes.

You can toss in what ever figures you find esthetically pleasing. Few people make the effort, it could be confusing in other element based systems. A little diorama for commanders could be nice too.

Why not just use the starter army from the book ? Whilst you're learning the game you're better off not worrying too much about army design. Play a few games with the starter armies and then see what changes you want to make.
