Are Very Small Battles Realistic?

I've started a solitaire set of battles as the Dutch in the 80 Years' War using the List of Battles as a guide: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_b ... %80%931600

Since all of the battles so far (up to 1568) have armies under 5,000 men I have been using using Very Small battles. At the Lieutenant General level, it has been very hard to get a win against the Spanish who have smaller formations available. Are the battle formations, like Early Pike & Shot at 2,000 men, too large for these sized battles?

I'm playing a skirmish to represent the Battle of Jemmingen 1568, where the forces are slightly larger. A Small battle in P&S seems to capture this well.

Well yes the bigger and costly the unit, the more unwieldy is for small battles if the enemy can swarm it with smaller ones.
