The year is 1300 AD. Though the last crusaders have been expelled from the Holy Land, the great struggle between Christendom and Islam is simply moving on to a new phase. The Ottomans, a rising power in Anatolia, have set their sights on the city of Constantinople as the seat of a new Rome. Facing them are the Christian powers of Hungary and Venice. A second front in this great war runs across the Iberian peninsula, where the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile battle the Berber Almohads. But internal Christian and Muslim conflicts run just as hot as the inter-religious ones. France is challenging England for dominance of the North Sea littoral, while the Holy Roman Empire, France, Aragon, Hungary and Venice all aspire to control of Italy. The East is no less divided, with the Ottomans facing off against Mamluke Egypt for the mantle of the Abbasid caliphate. Finally, the westernmost successor-states of Chingiz Khan's Mongolian empire, the Golden Horde and the Ilkhanate, still mostly Tengrist though considering conversion to Islam, look to resume their ferocious westward drive - if they can refrain from going to war against each other.
