A full explanation on how they work would be appreciated. I worked out it's something to do with fleets but how, what, why, when, anything would be appreciated. Another example of no writen infomation.

Ship roles are tied to the fleet designer. When you create a fleet, you decide how many of each ship role you want to comprise the fleet. When you go to build or reinforce a fleet with that design, it will use the most recent design of that given ship role. If you're just manually controlling your fleet composition then there is no reason to use the fleet designer, and no reason to use ship roles.
