Anyone know of a company that cells "overhead" shots of flat terrain? That is either laminated paper or flat painted rubber so there's nothing to "move out of the way"?

If you want to spend money that badly, I can sell you some!

Seriously though, you could probably make them for cheap with some cardboard.

"Unreal Estates" make some.

My personal view... I don't like them.

Some people have found problems with curling, but he states that he's fixed that problem now. The pictures are quite nice, but the overall effect on the wargames table isn't what I'm after.

Might be right up your alley.

On the flip side, "Miniature World Maker" is really nice stuff, but is 'textured' so might not be what you're looking for.

"Miniature World Maker" has had some negative press from people about the hills. I've never seen any. I really like his 'fields' and 'towns' and 'marshes' etc.

Anyway - he's the president of the Canberra Games Society, so if you looked them up you might be able to find them.

I made up some from photos and CG images printed on felt, have some spares and could get more printed. I have hills, woods, vineyards, brush. Dunes you can easily make your own by spraying dark sand paint over a wiggly edge onto light sand coloured board.

I bought a lot of stuff from them recently and I must say that it is REALLY nice terrain, IMHO the best commercially available terrain out there.
Their stuff is made with the wargamer in mind: the trees, rocks, marsh patches, etc... are separate from the underneath ground so they can be moved to make way for the minis.
As for the hills, they sell two types: the "gentle" and the "steep". The gentle hills are perfectly useable with minis as the slopes are gentle (surprise) enough. The steep hill are more difficult to put minis on (but, honestly, I don't think many phalanxes or cavalry battlegroup would go there anyway so the impact is quite limited).
All in all, I would greatly recommend their Field of Glory range (and their customer support is really top notch, which is a nice plus).

I took a look at their stuff and liked what I saw. I got some great fabric samples from the store recently though and will run with what I have. Evidently quilters can buy these little square things and they were on sale. I got some nice sandy stuff. A wonderful water effect. Some vines. And a jungle/swamp print. My wife has informed me that if I want to cut it up I need "anti-fraying spray". Will be picking that up soon.

Well, a few months ago I was troubled about the same exact thing: how could I get cheap overhead images of all kinds of terrain, that would also be easy to use and play with (ie not be uneven, so that I can place my battlegroups on it, without them toppling over, so that it's perfectly clear where my BGs are, etc).

And the answer was quite obvious: GoogleEarth!

Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it on Planet Earth. I have even made a Village terrain for my Medieval French out of the satellite image of Domremy, Jeanne d'Arc's birthplace!

Icing on the cake: You can process the image on a word processor and write on it the different characteristics of the particular terrain (Disrupts HF, Hides LF, Troops inside see only 4MUs, Troops inside shoot in 1 rank, Provides cover, etc).

I did something similar to this- I went to Junior General.org. They have overhead shots of trees,rocks,rivers,etc. I put them into Windows paint,resized and duplicated them,printed them out. I then glued them onto craft foam with rubber cement,to make flat woods,rough etc. Cheap and very transportable.
