Game not starting on Steam

I tried starting FOG2 Medieval on Steam, but the game fails to start - the "Play" button on the Steam page goes to "Cancel", then "Stop", then back to "Play" without ever bringing up the Medieval start screen.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game and DLCs, and also verified the integrity of the local game files using the Properties/Local Files right-click option for the game in my Steam library - no go.
FOG2 Ancients is working fine.
[Edit]: Never mind, after a PC restart and two Steam updates, everything is back to normal.
