It is possible to increase vehicle defense with improvised armor, at the price of a lower speed even if the unit is destroyed :

Seems to have been fixed by the latest version of the Horst hotfixes (v5).

I have to say, I am rather excited by what he is doing. To the extent that, unless a developer answers positively and affirmatively in that thread or the copy of it that I posted in Tech Support with a message directly to developers, I will consider this to be the "official version" of OOB.

Yep, that dead-unit issue was easy to fix, but then I noticed and remembered the more annoying undeployable issue if you switch armour in reserve list.
I checked for other modes and think kamikaze was the only other one that buggered the same way even "deployed" in hangars.
Both modes seem to work fine now, but give a damn in my topic if something (else) is acting strange.
