How do I create my own units?

I have no experience making 3d models but I really want to create new units for a mod I'm making and I read the guide for 3d models and it doesn't really give that much information.

Those who created or modified models in the past don't seem to be very active anymore. It has always been a self-help group here for most of the time.
For a start, you could download one of the mods here, like the somewhat outdated GabeMod and check out how it is structured and installed. Creating many unit variants from existing models is usually what I do.

The short version (no rudeness intended): OoB uses 3D models and not 2D drawings. So, you have to learn to build/manipulate 3D models with a 3D sofware (e.g. 3DSMax), with UV-mapped textures and all (I'm sure you can find a ton of youtube tutorials) and then export the model with the provided script.

is there anything cheaper than 3ds max that I can use? I don't have a lot of money right now.

The official mod page says: "To create 3D models, you will need access to the 3D Studio MAX or GMAX modelling software, as well as a paint tool to create the model textures." If you don't like Max, try the other one.

I have
very limited experience re-using 3d models to create "new" units: i wont be able to help you with the 3d editor, but maybe i could be of some help if creating new textures to pre-existing models+editing their stats is enough for you, at least for part of your project. I am quite rusty since i did most of these changes for my mod a couple of years ago, but I will try to make myself useful

Is there any way to change the color of a model without a 3d editor?
