Definitely worthwhile, especially in air combat. The only downside is that if you move a unit to contribute to a mass attack, and if the target is finished off before that unit attacks, you might not have an alternative target. Note that a mass attack is more effective if the attackers are not adjacent to one another.

It's just an effect of adjacency-- if there are other of your units next to the unit you want to attack, who themselves haven't attacked yet, you get a "mass attack" bonus of -1 or -2 to the defender's init. You can tell when it will happen bc it shows up on the screen when you "test" an attack, in similar fashion to other effects like recon and engineer

Mass attack is automatic. You just need to place several units around a target, the init malus for the defender will automatically be applied.
It works everywhere (ground, air, naval), only for melee combat of course (not artillery), and for all units that don’t already give another form of combat bonus (recon and pionneer).
This means that a standard unit won’t benefit from mass attack from a friendly recon unit which is also next to the target.
On the contrary, a recon unit will benefit from mass attack if a friendly tank is next to the target.
