I have a BG of armored heavy foot armed with pole arms. They are in melee with an enemy BG of armored heavy foot with defensive spears. Both BGs are steady. Each gets a "+" : one for pole arms and one for spears (which cancel each other).

"Pole arm cancels one level or armour only." Does this mean my BG will get a "+" for Better Armour since their pole arms degrade the enemy spears from armoured to protected?

As I understand it, Polearm cancels 1 POA advantage from armour. (Not cancels Armour).

In your example as POA are equal no effect further effect from Polearms. If you have protected troops and your opponent armoured that would normally provide a POA advantage, in such a case your Polearm would cancel this armour advantage and give an even contest
