Splitting a BG when conforming

At the weekend I had an iteresting debate to the effect that there is nothing in the rules to prevent a BG from splitting into two parts to conform as long as the parts were lined up. The argument used was that by lining up and stepping forwards the BG was conforming.

I ruled this did not happen but struggled to find a reason. The only thing I could find was that in the definition of stepping forwards (which is in the impact part of the rules) it states you can only step forwards upto 2MU and that you cannot leave contact with the rest of the BG.

Thoughts anyone.

I don't know if could help, but at p. 22 (near half of first column):

Code: Select all

The bases cannot be separated, except where this is specifically allowed by the rules.
I never find a rule that specifically allows to split a BG, but perhaps it's a my fault.

Split other than as specified would be an illegal formation.

Incomplete interpenetration splits a BG temporarily

And just to be clear ... when asked to rule it with James I said it couldn;t be done and said so specifically .... and there is the bit.

Yup, you and I agreed, it was Terry being 'difficult'.
