Setup restrictions in Sandbox battle

I'm playing a large sandbox campaign battle in desert terrain where I have to guard the baggage train through wooded country. In the deployment phase there are grey areas on both my flanks where the game has placed some of my forces. I can't redeploy them to more favourable positions. At the start of the battle they are immediately attacked on the first turn as the enemy spawns on my flanks. I've never noticed this before, is this a bug or some new feature? I'm playing as a Berber faction so lots of light horse and archers seem to be the ones affected.

Yeah, I recall that happening a time or two to me. One thing you might try is autodeploying a couple of times and see if that frees them up.

Because you have a lot of light troops, your autodeployment is extending into the area where the enemy will arrive.
You aren't supposed to have advance warning of the enemy arrival in this scenario, hence you don't get to redeploy those troops into a safer position.
(I appreciate that you do in fact get messages about the imminent arrival of the enemy, but that is necessitated by the program flow, and is not intended to indicate that you have plenty of time to redeploy.)
Being light troops, they should mostly be able to evade the attackers.
