Full screen availability changes from version to version

Hello,

I bought "Commander - Europe at War" today in a "physical" shop. The game installed as version 1.04 and ran flawlessly in full screen on my 1440x900 LCD.

But then I decided I wanted to try the upgrades. I first installed the 1.06 patch, not being sure whether I'd be allowed to use the "Gold" patch. And the game no longer wants to properly run in full screen. It looks like this:

The image does not stretch properly. I installed the 1.12 patch, but it didn't fix my issue.

What I'd like to stress is that the full screen option worked properly in 1.04. I'd prefer to play this game in full screen mode, so I'd appreciate any help!

I'm going to put this in tech support.

In that screenshot, the green button to the right is settings. Open it and select "Full Screen" button. Exit game and it saves this option. Next time you start game it will start in full screen.

It seems I didn't word myself properly. The game already IS in the "Full Screen" mode, but unfortunately the map and UI only take up the upper-left part of the screen - the rest is gray, as you can see on my screenshot. That's why I'm posting here - this option worked when my game version was 1.04.
I did what you said, there was an "x" alongside "Toggle Full Screen" - I pressed it and the game went into Window Mode. I pressed it again and it came back to "Full Screen", but unfortunately improperly again - with the grey areas around the map and UI.

edit: I'm sorry for posting in the wrong subforum.

Do you use dual screen function somehow setting up your display for TV+Computer?
It appears your display does not want to jump to 1024x768 which is the game resolution.
You can easily solve this then by setting your desktop resolution 1024x768 prior to running game.

Could you also try running the original 1.04 version again. Could it be something has updated a driver on your machine and this is the reason for the change, not the game code?

Sounds like its a scaling problem with your monitor or video card.Go into your on screen controls or video controls and set your monitor to fill to screen instead of fill to aspect ratio.

No, I'm not using this function.

Yes, this works, but after I return to 1440x900 the icons on my desktop are all messed up :D I tried to avoid this, but it seems to be the only (easy) way for me to play the game in full screen. Ah well. Thanks!

@iainmcneil: I'll reinstall the game and try this in the coming days.

By the way, thank you very much for including all language versions in the 1.12 patch. The Polish translation was terrible, but now thanks to you I can play in English.

Alright, I reinstalled the 1.04 version of the game. It runs great in full screen on my widescreen monitor! I'm not sure what to infer from this, but I hope you guys will know more :-)

edit: I'm delaying the installation of any further patches in case you tell me to do something specific before that.

I was about to post the same problem. I just got the game and it says it won't run on the resolution. I assume there must be a fix beyond having to change your resolution back and forth every time you play. I have never had to do that with other games. It would be pretty "bush league" if that was the only solution. I haven't really gotten into playing the game too much yet because of this problem. Any fix?

It does sound like something that should be fixable if Johan can work out what is causing it. You both can run fine in 1.04 and not in 1.12?

What exactly does the message say? is it a popup within the game or some external windows error message?
Did you also buy the game as 1.04 and upgraded or did you buy a new version of Commander (what version and where) ?

I have not tried any previous versions of the game so I can't say. I just recently bought and downloaded the game so I assume I am using the most recent version. The message is something along the lines of "resolution not supported" or something llike that. It is a game message that comes up. Actually what happened for me is that the intro movie started playing and it was in full screen. Then it stopped abruptly and came up with this message and then the game went to the half screen more described above with the rest grayed out. It seemed like the movie ended suddenly but I have never seen the movie normally so I can't really say if it played the whole thing or not.

Can u try to reduce the refresh rate before running game, what refresh rates are you using at the moment?

My resolution is 1920 by 1080 and the refresh rate is 59hz. I tried switching to 60 hz and it actually worked. The game is much more enjoyable now in full screen. Thanks.
