What exactly is "Rough" Ground?

As the title suggests, I'm trying to give myself a better picture of the battlefield, and I was wondering what exactly qualifies as rough ground in real life? So far the best I've been able to put together is things like rocky hills, but flat areas can be 'rough' too, so I'd love a few examples to get a better mental picture--I imagine it's somewhere Crossbowmen would be able to work fairly well from, shooting safely from rocky outcroppings and such, yet it also doesn't provide a cover bonus, so it's a very curious concept to me.

Mud is probably one example of rough ground, but what would some others be?

Aha, that makes sense as to why cav/heavy foot would have such a hard time dealing with it, especially in elevation.

I thought it was tiles inhabited by large packs of dogs

Great pictures, particularly the one of the dog-at-arms.

I remember seeing some kind of canine unit in Rome Total War, I think. Was that completely ahistorical?
