If you defend the airfields and do Operation Blut, then you will get a 1 SMG token. In exchange, this will result in a strong 6th Army reinforcing you in Operation Roland, making it easier to defeat the Soviet armies. Rescuing the 6th Army is also one of the three victory conditions needed in AO'43 to continue on the ahistorical path. You need two of three:

• Rescuing the 6th Army (AO'42)
  Capturing all of the Prokhorovka victory hexes (AO'43)
  Capturing all of the secondary victory hexes in Operation Roland (AO'43)

Needless to say, if you do the first, doing the third is a lot easier and allows you to easily go on the ahistorical/victory path.
