If a 2 base Superior BG loses a base, the remaining base is removed in the JAP. Does the enemy fighting it make a pursuit move ? We said no, as the single base BG does not actually break, but is just removed. Was that correct ?

The answer is on page 116:
Battle groups that are on autobreak or down to one base are removed at the end of the joint action phase.
So the bg first makes it rout move, followed by a pursuit if there is still enemy in contact, and than they are removed from the game.

Battle groups that auto break are broken so make a rout move. Superior and elite BG do not break unless they lose more than 50%, so are removed at the end of the JAP without having broken.

I assume they stand and fight to the last man?

That's what I thought - they don't rout so there is no pursuit move.

Ok, sorry, i was wrong - I missed the part with "not broken" and was thinking about autobreak, which is another case.

On a side note, how does this apply for an artillery BG? Is there pursuit when an artillery BG loses a base?

I would say they do pursue, which represents them running down the fleeing crew.

It's explicitly stated in the rules that you don't pursue broken artillery.
