I am at Lake Ladoga, but it seems impossible to save Manstein? He dies during the fifth soviet turn. I tried three times. I just can't get my airfields far enough forwards in time to get my planes in range of Manstein. I even tried strat bombers, nothing works. What am I missing?

Are you playing with some of the challenge options? Those can easily break scenarios with AI allies since they don't get the effect, but the enemy they face can.

No, just highest standard difficulty level. I also thought about whether that fucks this up. If that is the case, is there any workaround?

Well it is possible to save him, but im quite unsure how i did it in my last playthrough.
But i remember that it was way harder and needed a reload

generallisimus diff might be enough to break it, the 20% acc bonus is heavy. there are several cheatcodes u could use to make him last longer. if u want them let me know.

I guess you have to use cheat command to keep him alive then, if it really is too difficult on highest difficulty and you don't want to play it on lower one. If you want the achievement, then maybe you just have to make it without his survival.

now i remember^^ it can be done on generallisimus, but i needed like 2-3 goes until i figured it out. do not remember exactly how i did it anymore. to long ago sorry.

Ignore Volkhov. Take 1 or 2 bridge pioneers with your main force through Khotovo and then east across the river. I don't ever recall him being eliminated in only 5 turns, but maybe you have to distract the Russian units to attack/defend your forces so they don't go after Manstein immediately. Also, by now, you should have a significant number of units with 4 stars of experience. If not, then you might have a difficult time pushing through the Russians quickly and efficiently.

I would suggest trying paratroopers if you happen to already know where he is. a few of them can drop in and encircle enemy units causing issues (mostly rocket artillery) which then allows his unit to easily defend itself against other targets.

Interestingly, I have also never had issues with him getting defeated so quickly despite running the campaign several times, but it can boil down to some set of unfortunate weather and move circumstances that cause this - I can also recommend reloading a save from the previous mission - not the last turn, but the turn before. This can in theory adjust some patterns in the AI and make this not happen as the way units act can change.

I had some trouble the first couple of times too, but not now.

You need to make getting to him a priority. The other objectives elsewhere can wait. I send my strongest force East across the top section of the map. Force a crossing at the bridge and then drive south through all of the forces. You will attract enemy forces away from Jr. to attack you, plus you will be able to crush them and save him. You have time to take the other objectives, so I strengthen my units who go search for him and weaken the other "battle groups" since they are not in the same hurray.
