How to distinguish generals (and other questions)

So, if I understood it correctly, the only differences among commanders are their "allegiance" and their radius (is this right, first of all?).
Is highlighting the command range the only way to distinguish among a troop, field or great commander?
Does the C in C have some hidden bonus, and/or is he always at least a field commander for it?
A thing I love of this game is that I keep learning something
Edit: also, the "general in combat" bonus, applies only to the units that were in that specific general command during deployement, or is available for all units like the free 45 turn?

A general with a unit gives you a combat bonus.
A general in combat gives you a cohesion test bonus to units within combat command range.
A general not in combat gives you the turn bonus to units within the command range.
I have hardly played any games with an allied general and am not entirely sure where those bonuses are any different.

Ok I got these rules, still the only things that distinguish them is their quality (and so their radius)?

Those are the rules, there is nothing else.

If you click on different generals with "toggle command range" on you can see that they have different radii. My initial question was if that radius is the only tangible difference among them

It is the only way you can tell whether they are troop commanders, field commanders or great commanders. Command range is the only difference between those general types.
The update accompanying the next DLC will add a gold ball at the top of the banner of the C-in-C.
In Custom Battles the C-in-C is always a Field Commander, as is the Sub-General (if any) in command of the infantry. The others are Troop Commanders.
In Campaigns it depends on the Campaign setup. In Epic Battles it depends on the scenario designer.
