Assigning commanders

EDIT: solved, I was assigning the same commander, but I forgot to give them the trait "generic".

Two more questions:
1- if all my commanders survive a battle, will they carry over to the next scenario in the campaign?

2- is there any way to restrict them to a certain class of units so they can't be assigned to another class?

3- is there a way to edit the time after a wounded/imprisoned commander can be assigned again?

1) Yes.

2) Take a look at the Data/Commanders.txt file and check the various stat options for the commanders. Unit class is not an option.

3) No

One thing I find wrong about commanders and that you get a message when a commander is injured but you don’t get a message when he’s healed :o
I recently played a turn without assigning a commander who had returned from the hospital cured because I had not noticed :(
When you come back healed on the battlefield, the least you can do is present yourself again

Thanks for the replies.

One more question: does the AI reassign its healed commanders on its own when they come back?

I doubt the AI is able to reassign a healed commander. I'm not even sure that AI commanders can be wounded/imprisoned...

Another thing the AI won't do is refuel air units off-map and redeploy them. So it is usally better to give the AI an airstrip or two.

This works in my favor so I'm going to thank the AI for that.

I tried fiddling with unit categories but I couldn't create a new one so I'll have to ask players to not assign commanders ported over from older missions...

I’m having trouble understanding the commander’s injury system.
A unit may suffer significant losses without the commander being affected and a unit may suffer minor losses but the commander is affected  Sounds pretty random to me :?:

Ok, new problem: accumulating commanders clutters the UI... and there is no command to remove idle commanders. Not only that: but trying to remove the unit they are in via trigger doesn't remove the commander... I think my cool commanders' idea is going to be binned due to technical limitations.

Ok, update: I didn't want to ditch the commanders' idea so I just limited the number available for the player. After all, if they carry over and can never be removed, there's no reason to assign new ones for each scenario... I'll just add a disclaimer event at the start of the campaign asking the player to only assign Army HQ "commander" to Army HQs and "Offensive/Defensive Operations" to Corps HQs.

In a campaign, commanders are good for using as rewards, especially for secondary objectives.

In OOB how do you unassigned commanders. It's a primary objective in the Red Storm scenario whereby commanders must be detached from core units. I can't seem to find how to do this! Can someone explain how?

Select the unit with a commander and hit key i. Then you should be able to detach the commander. You can reassign the commander after a 1 turn delay.
