how are heroes printed? do I have to kill the enemy who has heroes and then I'll get him? I have units with 2-3 stars but no heroes yet. could someone please explain this to me. Thanks

Heroes are given at the start of each scenario. There are options to reduce this. Very first scenario may not give a hero.

Heroes must be assigned.

There are also “organic” heroes assigned to particular units after combat achievements, akin to PC1. These cannot be reassigned. I don’t know what the precise mechanics are, but I too am curious.

That's "Award". Right click to check your units in the Award tab, or read the manual.
