In order to deal with Captured units go to the Purchase Units screen and scroll down to see if you have a captured area screen notice in the screen shot below it reads "captured" at the top of this section of the Purchase Area - The most important thing on this screen is the number of units you have of a particular captured unit. This number must be 10 or higher in order for you to be able to use a captured unit. Notice the red marks on this screen shot this shows captured units having 10 or more so these units and only these units if you purchase them you can deploy them. (whiney remark: ... The manual only mentions you need 10 or more strength points does not inform you where this number is reflected ... [ I suppose they think I am brilliant but I'm not ..])
Ok so you can only purchase the units that have 10 or more AND you can only purchase them if you have enough core slots or auxiliary slots available and enough prestige to buy them. I think also that regarding replacement these are limited to what you have over the number 10 for example if your unit shows you have 12 of a captured unit you buy it now you have 2 left so you have only two replacements left for it in the upcoming battle unless they allow units to be replacements that you may or may not capture during the battle who knows.
Some other things to consider ... if your Captured unit screen shows greyed out and non greyed out units this means two things - First it means if the unit is greyed out that you do not have enough prestige and or slots to deploy the unit slots meaning core and or auxiliary. If you for example put units in reserve this may cause a greyed out captured unit to be highlighted where you can buy it for deployment in the event you have enough prestige to buy it once the slots are opened up; however, we must remembered that this now non greyed out captured unit though is only allowed to be purchased IF you have 10 or more units of it. So Second if means greyed and non greyed out units are simply only units you can buy if you have enough slots open and if you have 10 or more of each. Greyed out means you need to simply open some slots but again, you must have 10 of them.
Finally last thing to consider - If you want a captured unit in your core then buy it when you have enough core slots to fit it in or open up core slots by putting units in reserve to fit them in. In the event or in other words When you core slots are full and IF you have auxiliary slots then if you buy a captured unit it will then go to the auxiliary group on the map. So keep this in mind when you buy a captured unit to use it will be in your core force if you buy it when you have room or slots in your core force to fit it in. If core is full it goes to auxiliary - Guess what if core and auxiliary is full all of the units on the captured unit screen will be greyed out indicating you cannot buy them but remember this is only partly true you can buy them if they have 10 or more of a given unit and if you free up or have slots free.
