You have a unit of 6 bases with a front rank of 3 light spear with a second rank of 3 bowmen and the front rank looses a man to shooting. An archers steps forward into the front rank. Now which is the first shooting rank? Is it the front rank with only 2 bowman base or is it 3 bases as each is the first shooting rank in each file. I.e. do you fire with 3 bases, counting the archer as the first shooting rank of each file, or do you only shoot with 2 bases, 1 from the front rank and 1 per two from the second rank?

The answer is in the question. First rank of shooters, not first rank of bases !! So all three shooters will still be in the first rank of shooting.
