English 1558 -1583 v Scottish 1560-68
Open Battle, Agricultural terrain, wide, large armies
Cheap heavy (unarmoured) pike en masse, highlanders and heavy guns against large over-priced Elizabethan blocks of rubbish and cavalry who've got an identity crisis. This is because the cavalry can't decide whether they're supposed to be skirmishers, charging lancers, or knights who've got incompetent squires that leave most of the amour at the manor-house (or is it a castle?)
All I can say is
- either take
maximum rubbish and fight in the rough or forest (I'll take my chances against the highlanders and hope they can't get enough casualties to frag my poor confused Englishmen.)
- or
lots of light cavalry to run around like mad march-hares!
Either way, divine intervention is needed! Onward...

Hi all,
I notice that Alan's instruction is to use armies from Tercio to Salvo, but I see matches being set up using Extra Nations V3.......
Which module is correct? or doesn't it matter?
To Lascar......I'll issue the challenge as soon as anyone offers confirmation.

Doesn't matter. The lists are the same under either module.

Good luck Paul. You will undoubtedly be
Revere(d) on the successful conclusion of this feat of arms. Yet, I shiver at the thought of hearing the refrain "...the Scottish are coming, the Scottish are coming..."

As it seems there are some small differences between the army lists for Extra Nations and those for Tercio to Salvo, please use the latter for your game. If a game is already well underway using Extra Nations I leave it to your common sense and preference as to whether to continue or restart. Please let me know in case of difficulties or disagreement.

I just spotted it Alan and will ask Doyley to restart our game as he set it up using Extra Nations V3.
The Scots have more options under Tercio to Salvo
Please, all players use Tercio to Salvo.

Sorry Paul, put you crook. Clearly, Englishmen can't count past two. I didn't pick up the 2 border lancers instead of the 5 available in the tercio/salvo... I better reissue my challenge as well.

The English have taken to a field devoid of terrain...gulp (our scouts have been given a very stern look and made to sit on their horses in the naughty corner!)

Its time for me as commander of His Royal Majesty's loyal forces to give instructions to our gallant commanders in this great endeavour...so here goes.
Good luck and get stuck in.
The Scottish have a very effective army of huge blocks of average pike, with hordes of Highlanders who are possibly the best rough terrrain troops around. They also have quite a few border raider light horse (my favourite troop type) and a few not overly impressive cavalry to slow us down.
We have equally large blocks of foot who can't decide if they are oldfashioned bill and bowmen, or modern pike and arqubeus. Fortunately they are better than the bill and bow from 2 rounds previous as they are actually kiels and can't be flank charged. However at least half of ours are raw and therefore basically shite. For rough terrain troops we have a few bowmen and light arquebus neither of whom will handle the highlanders. We have more and better cavalry but our light horse will struggle against the border raiders.
So my advice is try to avoid rough terrain, attack one end of his army and try to get your cavalry into the rear of his pike, and remember one very important fact...God is an Englishman.

Sorry that is not a fact it is fiction.... by R F Delderfield (and set in the 19th Century not the 16th).
