Deleting Game Saves

I'm know I have to do it with Explorer and I know where the save files are located. I have 4 Autosave files (AUTO1 -4), 3 Quicksave files (QUICK 1-3), a Data file, and 7 manual save files (SAVE 1 through 7). Should I delete the folders themselves (QUICK 1, for instance) or should I open the folder and delete the contents?
I searched the forum and discovered I should NOT delete the SAVE 1 file that hides all the other saves. If I keep the SAVE 1 file and whatever my most recent save is (say, SAVE 7), will I have any problems? I don't know if I need to leave the Autosave folders or not.
Have to say this is the most unfriendly save system I've ever seen.
Edit -- Just discovered the garbage can icon on the save menu. Does this mean I no longer have to worry about ensuring the SAVE 1 file still exists?
