I am trying to land some aircraft on one of my carriers. I keep getting this message, aircraft cannot land if a ground unit occupies the airfield. the carrier has open slots to land so what am i doing wrong?

Whar aircrafts are you using? To land on a carrier I think the aircraft needs to be a marine type?

Console or PC version?

If it's console, there's a fellow reporting (probably) the same thing.

Never saw this popup on carriers on the PC version. Either it's full or not. The only thing confusing new players may be that you have to choose a carrier if your plane's in range of two carriers and could land on either of them on the same turn.

Landing fields and aircraft carriers have a limited number of storage slots. Are there any other aircraft onboard the carrier at the time you are trying to land? It may just be a generic message indicating that there are no spaces available for your aircraft to land.
