I looked but didn't see the answer to this. Is there a point to take the alt victory cond.(defend the 3 airfields) vs. defend the rail station?

It determines which of the two ending Scenarios you have the option to play. One of those Scenarios (can't remember which one of the top of my head, but it's the ahistorical path) adds a piece of captured SMG infantry I believe to your equipment, which will presumably be the key to some special event, or possibly be how you access an ahistorical WW2 ending path of AO.

We won't know for sure until 1943, or even 1944/45 come out.

I doesn't matter. Regardless of which you try to defend, it offers you the choice of next scenario. Operation Winterstorm is the historical path/map. Operation Blut is the ahistorical path. Then the DLC ends so nobody (who's talking ) really knows how AO43 will unfold. Kerensky has said it isn't possible, currently at least, to design the game so that different victory achievements will automatically choose the next scenario for you. Hence the choice irrespective of which you did or didn't accomplish.

I have since the first time I played been able to successfully defend both.

Both objectives can indeed be achieved. However, there is a bug in the scenario. The Soviet temporary airfields are coded incorrectly, so the 15 Soviet aircraft crash on Turn 1 as there are no valid Soviet airfields...

Once that is fixed in the patch (whenever it comes out), it should be more challenging to do both.
