Deep Streams

The manual doesn't say what different steams do. And the mouseover on Deep Streams says only 'Deep Stream'. So what does a deep stream do without scrolling through the forums, and why shouldn't a newbie know? I only ask because one down the middle of a recent tournament game lead to research and a very unenjoyable game for an army with not enough bows whilst the opponent had lots! Not saying this couldn't be managed, but the in-game info should signpost.

Turn on Detailed Tooltips in options and it'll tell you when you mouse over all the different terrain effects.

I have got detailed tooltips switched on and all it says is 'Deep Stream'. That's my point.

How do you defend/use a deep stream? Do you stand in or behind it or stay away from them? lol

For a deep stream you can put medium infantry on it or behind it as you like. Other streams are not so troublesome.

I was also interested to see elephants charge my Spanish Scutarii. I think my Scutarii were behind the deep stream and the elephants were on it. They disrupted the Scutarii on impact!

Medium Foot are Moderately Disordered in Deep Stream, you're better off standing them behind it, assuming you have missile superiority.

Thank you. I am playing Irish 900-1049 vs Anglo Saxon 871-949. The map has a deep stream and it seems to be of no help to anyone. no matter if your in it or on one side or the other. More to the point the Irish can't get a break, lol
PS -its a mirroed game.

Deep streams are a nightmare and require a completely different approach. A light jav can beat a heavy inf opponent sometimes and cav really struggle. You need to plan it in advance. It really depends on your army - a massed archer army lined up on the other side of the stream will destroy the strongest army. Try to create a bridgehead with your strongest troops or trap their strongest with some of your weakest in the stream and make a crossing somewhere else. Archery across the stream is obviously very effective.

You are right. I didn't. I thought I had them on. Probably because they are on in Medieval which I have been playing more recently.
