8 ) (without the space) is code for the

smiley.
Presumably someone has programmed it not to use the smiley if it is bracketed on both sides.

Where on the forum does it not behave like this?
(I have tried it on Main and Tournament fora, and it works the same there.)

Am I not understanding something? In my tournament forum, if I type (8) I get (8

instead. I suppose I could change everything to square brackets, but that would be a bit of a pain.

I just tried it on your forum and it showed (8).

OK, Thanks. I see what it is now. If I type (S8) it is fine, but I was previously typing it with a space between the S and the 8 and it does this (S

.

Aye, that would do it.

Ah, so if type 8 with a single bracket after it when you might making a list of points, it appears as
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)

9)

The easiest way to stop the 8 from turning into a smilie, is to check the Disable smilies box at the bottom of the 'POST A REPLY' page:

Not as far as I know. You have to check that box every time you want to avoid them.

Actually, I think I have just discovered how to turn off smilies permanently in your posts:
Click on the drop down arrow by your username in the top right hand corner of the screen. Select "User Control Panel", and then click on the "Board Preferences tab", then select "Edit posting defaults". You will then see a line that says "Enable smilies by default:", turn it off.
I've not tested it yet, but I reckon that should do the trick.
