As Lydia the AI has declared war on Persia for me, I cant think of anything i have done to make this happen, can anyone advise is it random or is it because relations are poor (-37. To be clear the message says i declared war on them, indeed i reloaded the autosave and did a diplomatic transaction with them (that succeded) but still i declared war on them. I thought that this only happened if you selected the option, otherwise, if relations are poor enough they declare on you or hostilities "break out" ?

It does not ring a bell, so that's strange. That your own nation declares war without your approval ... I would need to double check if an event does that.

Aha, I have worked it out I think. I was at war with Athens and my move advanced on their capital. I think this made the AI accept a client state offer from Persia, therefore I was deemed to have declared war on Persia.

Interestingly I found out by replaying from a couple of turns earlier, sitting and sieging Athens other region for an extra turn then sieging them in Athens. This seemed not to have incurred the client state request/acceptance so no war. All logical but not very clear because the zones are very small and athens client state status not obvious. I had not realised becoming a client state instantly dragged the protector into the fight (although it is on reflection obvious.

Good to know and thanks for investigating... Indeed that's a special case where either Athens or Sparta will sell their soul so to speak!
