Les Nerviens 2009 - Game 2

So after a hearty lunch of a baguette and a few beers I found where I was meant to be for my next game.

This time I was facing Nathan Wilputte who was playing an Athenian army (Early armoured types with Spartans).

I forgot to add that I also wanted to get a fair amount of terrain onto each board because it would be handy for my Numidians (foot and cav), Gauls and the Elephants.

Image

The terrain layout left the centre pretty much empty with most of it on my edge or the top right. I decided to go for the Numidian Cavalry on both sides to try and draw units away from the main fight and make a dash for the camp if I could. The centre was held by the African Veterans on the right and the Gauls on the left who were to charge forward and threaten the enemy flank with the Elephants. The Gallic Cavalry and a unit of Gauls were tasked to go and take out the isolated hopilte unit to the top left.

Image

Both sides advanced towards each other with my Gallic Cavalry making a dash for the left board edge. Over on the right the Numidian foot although outnumbering the greek javelinmen 2 to 1 managed to get themselves disrupted.

Image

The main battle lines in the centre closed while my Numidian Calvary on the right try to tie up the greeks on that side with my Numidian foot. On the left side my Gallic Cavalry had managed to get on the flank of the Athenian Spear while the Gauls moved up from the front. The Elephants decided to remain in the area as a threat while I planned to move the Gauls to the right of the Elephants up and the 90 degree turn and flank charge the main line. The Numidian Cav meanwhile split and 1 unit managed to dash around the back of the Athenians, heading towards the baggage.

Image

In the centre the lines prepared to clash, then disaster struck!! The Gaul unit at the left most of my line charge into the Spartans and were soundly thrashed, they then broke and fled for the edge. I then managed to get another unit of Gauls on the flank of the Spartans and charged but even with the disrupting effect and impact I failed to dent them anymore and actually lost bases. On the right my Numidian Cav were chased around to no effect and the Numidian foot pulled back slowly through the terrain. On the left the Athenians formed Orb and tried to hold the impact but casualities were heavy and cohension began to drop.

Image

The main lines crashed and the African Veterans came off the worst against a unit of Spartans and 2 Athenian's. The Gauls who were fleeing were rallied but the other unit of Gauls who had flank charged were about to break. The Athenians in Orb on the left broke and the Gallic foot and Cavalry with the Elephants squared off against another unit, determined to do the same trick. On the right the game of Greek cat and Numidian Mouse continued. While I managed to take the camp with the Numidian Cav.

Due to camera issues I didnt take any more phots of this battle. The right flank hadnt change when we finished but on the left disaster struck when the combined charge of the Gauls and Elephants failed badly with the Elephants exploading again in a round and the Gauls breaking the next turn. This meant that when the Gallic Cavalry charged into the flank of the Athenian Spearman without support couldnt break them and was never finished. In the centre the unit of Gauls who had flanked charged were broken while the other covered the flank of the African Vets and then fled into the terrain when the Athenians advanced. The main battle lin flowed back and forth with the right most unit of African Vets auto breaking while the middle unit destroyed its opponents. The left most unit fought the Spartans and the odds were tipped against us when another unit of Spartans joined in on the left. Through skillful dice throwing the African Veterans managed to outroll the Spartans and broke a unit that then broke the Athenian army.

The result for a bloody victory for the Carthagians 12 points to 8.

A few of the points I learnt from the game were...

Good-
1-I used the Gallic Cavalry well.
2-The Numidian Cav were played well and managed to take a camp and tie up 2+ enemy units.

Bad-
1-I used the Elephants poorly again.
2-Through poor planning I allowed a unit of Gauls to charge Spartans and get toasted.
3-Even with a flank charge the Gauls are very dependant on the impact phase.
4-I allowed the Athenians to tempt my line into charging by not clearing out their Javelinmen.

surely 17-8 if the enemy broke. And congratulations on the skillful dice.

Possibly another first for you here Con.

Was your opponent shorter than you?
