I'm short on prestige, but then I've Elite replaced from the first mission on in the US campaign.
In future I'll just use basic replacements as I'm not 100% sure on the benefits of experience, but in my experience so far, it doesn't really matter that much if you have the latest gear, as there are ways around things.
Ships for example; Carriers are extremely expensive, so I don't upgrade them, but then I'm not sticking them in the front lines so they won't be using any of their stats besides capacity.
US Destroyers (Gleaves I think is the base model in 1941?) are upgrade traps, the Gleaves 42-43 for example offer weaker naval gun for higher air attack, but you don't have a direct air fire attack? I prefer to have the air battles happen a long way from my navy or intercepted before they're in ship firing range.
Artillery, especially the later models have so much range you don't need to go for the same model as the SPA gun (Long Tom vs Long Tom mechanised for example), because the Long Tom shoots over 8 hexes, I can't possibly see what map you'd need a Long Tom on wheels really.
On the field, you can flank or lay down suppressing fire - time limits can be exceedingly generous in some of the missions.
Biggest offenders for prestige drain is the airforce, as usual, and given the US campaign is 90% air battles, 5 % navy and 5% infantry, it's not surprising they drag on the money. I've found Air definitely benefits from keeping up to date with the latest models though, because you want to squeeze every hit % possible as there's no quick and easy way to eliminate the losses, unlike land where you can take your time and arty bomb things to death before assaulting.
Last I played OOB before I came back recently, Battleships were a thing of beauty. It seems they absolutely suck now though. Heavy Cruisers seem to be better at direct fire, they certainly seem better in terms of numbers and performers in my game so far. Don't know why that's the case, I love a nice battleship. =/

It is a real shock coming from PC1 and PC2 or even Open General (PG2 reloaded) and having such a hard time to kill a single polish infantry unit with 2 german pioneers + 1x 10mm arty + scout 221
I am playing Erik's 1939 german campaign btw.
I haven't managed to do the bunker secondary objective in the first German official campaign mission in Poland.

I genuinely don't see how it can be done without wading into the river, as the engineer needs two turns to get into the river and bridge it. If I hit the south river, he obviously gets attacked. Did you ever do it?
