I have recently set up a few games in Ancients again to prepare for the Digital League. I have mostly been playing in Medieval in the last few months. The first thing I see when choosing my units for 1600-point battles in Classical is that I can take almost everything. There are no real 'hard choices'. I think someone on the forum mentioned this recently. At 1200 points you have to decide what to take and in which direction you will go with your army. You may take heavy infantry and less skirmishers, for example. At 1600 points you can take as many skirmishers as you want with little problem it seems to me.

Totally depends on the army. With many armies even at 1600 pts there are significant choices to make.

I feel it's better in some ways that you can pick more stuff , there is less chance that your game is scuppered from the start because you made the wrong troop selections. The game will be more about how you use those troops.

In my experience bad selections happen as frequently with 1200 points as they do with 1600 points. However the big advantage of larger armies is that the games are not dominated by one or two really bad luck moments. If a disaster occurs through bad dice, and it does quite frequently, with a larger army you have a better chance of recovering as you are able to use reserves and support troops while still having a reasonable width main line.
