Placing Rivers

I'm a casual player (my models are paper cut outs of rectangles) and I have played Armati II and _some_ DBA. I'm confused by river placement. Reading through the articles here I found the answer to my first question, width is evidently in another Appendix (which I thought was odd). This section also spells out bends. Its not clear about placement. Does the river (and for that matter road) placement go anywhere as long as it has no more than 2 curves? Do you dice for placement like other pieces? If so, how do I interpret the results?

You place it where you want to in accord with the rules. The only dice roll that is made is to remove it by the opponent.

So it can't be shifted at all? But you do still roll, that is only one result counts? I know you also have to make the depth roll...

Oh, sorry, I was thinking of a waterway - not a river - probably similar, but you'd have to wait for others who use rivers to answer in more detail.

River: Up to 4 MUs wide, must lie entirely within 6 MUs of a side table edge. May not contain more than two bends. Can only be chosen by player with pre-battle initiative. May not be slid but can be removed on a modified die roll of 6+. Adjustment die roll at +1. A river must be the first terrain piece placed.

And if it isn't removed by your opponent you then dice to determine it's going.
See page 131.
