I don't know. Their stats are obviously better than the standard equipment, but in recent playthroughs I have not used them. Hell, I even deny surrendering the CD points for the twin strat bomber bc I'd rather have BOTH of the SPAT units in the training round. The main problem with them is the heavy core slot costs and for some reason I have been very unlucky for a long time when it comes to being awarded Zero/Reduced Slots heroes.

Bf109Z is the best fighter-bomber you can get so far, definitely worth it. He111Z is a bit more questionable, mostly good for having very long range. I'd personally skip the first batch of 111Zs to get enough CP together for both Emil and Dicker Max.

I use a zero slots+Elsa+rapid fire x1.5 21cm Mörser. Lethal attack is really kinda overkill on a 15-strength high-vet 21cm, and the extra range and ammo are marvelous paired with its inate counterbattery ability.

i like the overkill for highly entrenched units especially infantry which i'm after equipment but usually CPs from the hex they occupy

They are both offered in the Training Mission where you also get Rudel. If you have the CD points, you can say yes to BOTH and get both. But if you took all other offers (i.e. the freak tac and strat bombers), then you'll only be able to say yes/get one of them.

I adore all the alternatives this game offer. I've tried both Bf109Z and He111Z and I end up with He111Z. He111Z is a great ship killer and flying artillery. Also I like to keep my unit core diverse and strat bombers often "take one for the team" core slots-wise. So I decided to buff up and take out this really good one strat bomber everytime it makes sense.

... but make no mistake - I LOVE fighter-bombers in general.

In the end it all comes to your available hero list and figuring out what combination of heroes work best (or are fun) for what unit you can field. I feel no shame to equip my He111Z with double attack, lehal attack and lightning attack heroes and watch it bomb the crap out of any infantry or ship unit on the map. Can I use these heroes more effectively on other units? Probably yes. Am I having fun with my double-fuselage He111Z? Hell yes!

It's the training mission right before Raiseniai.

As for Crete, do you have a lot of infantry to turn into Fallschirms and a strong airforce? Then yes.

My recommendation is to do all missions that are available. Skip only if you can't manage. Reasons why:
- Unit XP is invaluable. Top as much units to DLC XP ceiling as you can. It will provide you with variety of decently trained units to choose from for every scenario.
- "Optional" missions often provide equipment caches with an equipment you can't capture normally (planes).
- Crete is a fantastic scenario and quite nasty depiction of paratrooper graveyard. Friendly AI behavior supports this feeling a lot unfortunately
- Crete is a great scenario to improve your infantry fight technique as well as "make do" approach. It will also push you to consider a lot of unusual hero combinations for your infantry.
- As Crete is famous historical battleground, you really should try it!

Just focus on the objectives and supply hexes, read (and use) the terrain to your advantage, apply (and avoid) encirclements where possible and use captured airfields to redeploy your paratroopers to new locations by air. You'll be fine.

If you play with Anti-Air Veteran, then using them on AA guns is a waste and pointless. So that leaves either Artillery or Strat bombers. If you don't then it really comes down to a bunch of factors that include the needs of the map you're playing, your heroes, and your units' experience level. For instance, when my Wurfrahmen 40 has 3+ stars, it really doesn't need a Lethal hero to do serious damage. I would then chose another unit where it will have greater impact. If you're playing Moscow with foul weather and all, then I'd chose an artillery piece over an Strat bomber because you'll benefit from its attack each turn, not just when the weather is good.

Lastly, if possible, I like to combine it with Double Attack if using it on a Strat bomber or artillery piece and OS the unit as well if you can.

Just take a look at soft/hard (or air) attack on untis with the suppressing fire trait.

I'm using lethal attack hero on strat bomber (because I really want it to be at least somewhat useful, which works fine and it is not entirely OP) and on 21cm artillery. It has been discussed im several threads already - 21cm arty can "read minds" of enemy artillery -> counter battery fire od 21cm arty takes place before enemy arty shoots. With lethal attack hero and other support fire-related heroes and overstrength this result in hillarious situations - player 21cm arty vaporising any AI pieces bold enough to shoot.

Double-like for the man that uses Strat Bombers

Thank you. I also like to use cheap strat bombers as a bait for luring out enemy fighters, but don't tell the crews  .

I seems to me that strat bombers are surprisingly resilient to fighters, so whenever I have some core-slots to spare, I equip Ju88 with few purely defensive heroes and "park it" inside enemy intrecept range. And next turn I let Herr Bär and his gang off the leash.

I'm just sitting here laughing with 4 strats in my AO core, because holy hell do they ever do some yeomen's work for their 2CP per when you're going through AO'40 and '41 with Trench Slog active. Doesn't even need heroes, just the entrenchment busting and suppression and movement reduction is a great deal and enough for me to take at least one along in most scenarios. (The last one is hilarious for defensive actions: You can selectively stratbomb enemy units as they are moving up to ensure they'll hit your defense line piecemeal instead of all at once.)
