Any scenario modified = crash

How can I modify any existing scenario without it crashing when I afterwards select 'PLAY' ? I have already replaced the Editor. It seems to me every time there is an update to this game another bunch of issues arises which were not present before. I am seriously considering uninstalling .21 and installing the original version via my CDs, flaws and all.
There are other issues with the Editor in that selecting some units places the wrong unit on the map! I think there must be some units or terrain used which causes crashes...except I've no idea which ones. Altogether PC2 is quite a frustrating experience and not worth the £60 I paid for it.
