man its kicking my ass. not the capturing Smolensk but trying to capture the other 2 cities first to get bonus points. Russian numerical superiority seems unsurmountable? any ideas?

also the IV2 and G tank run out of reinforcements too soon. overwhelmed

What do your forces look like? Smolensk is a big tank battle, so make sure you bring anti tank, your own best tanks and especially dive bombers.

You have to basically 'fight upstream' in that one. The Russians have enough forces to push on you throughout the game, you need to be able to push 2-3 hexes into their stream each turn. If you sit behind your guns/antitank they'll just sit in front of you, not attacking, and you won't make it in time.

Yes. You buy it as AA, but it can be changed to anti-tank. Best german AT available through the entire war.
