I'm playing a Guadalcanal scenario. Some units are isolated inland with all the effects of that. Now I had two units atteck by air and land damaging them but not destroying them. On e reteated the remained in place but with serve supply. When my turn came they had disappeared

Are they snipers or some other unit that can only be seen by having a unit right next to them (infantry, AA, AT, ATY, or recon only, not tanks)? That might be the issue, that they are concealable, and you need to move one of these types of units next to them to see them again. MG boxes work this way as well, and some recon cars.

I ran the scenario three times with the same result, they just dissappeared. On two occasions one still had 7 strength points and did not move out of the hex and it had some forts. I doubt with the best effort of any sniper he could kill a unit hat size.

I'm beginning to think it was designed. Is this possible can you withdraw units like that?

I don't know how it's going in your battle — and I am assuming that it's Guadalcanal from the official DLC Rising Sun campaign (you should specify this when you ask questions specific to a scenario or campaign) — but yes, units can be withdrawn from the map based on certain conditions:

Here, the designer has provided that if the Americans take the pocket, the two associated Japanese units are removed.

My pleasure. You are asking good questions.
