In the Epic Battle of Hastings, 1066, the Norman left is commanded by Alan Fergant. He was later to become the Duke of Brittany, but in 1066 he was just 3 years-old. The Norman left was possibly commanded by Alan the Red, or Alan Rufus, a Breton nobleman.

Yes, you seem to be right. It looks like one of the primary sources (Wace) confused Fergant with Rufus, and the error has persisted even into some modern books, one of which I used as the source for the names of the Norman commanders. I will see if it can be changed.

Many thanks

This is a very interesting battle, that I have fought many times with many miniatures and board war game rule sets. So far, so good in a MP game as the Normans.

Some games show Bishop Odo commanding the Norman left flank.
