Decrementing unit strength after combat

Is it a rather recent change that decrements unit strength after combat BEFORE any shots are fired for the combat? I swear that I remember that it used to be that units would combat, we would hear and see the booms and bangs, and THEN the strength points would be decremented.

As it is now, I tell my unit to go into combat with the enemy, and the strength points are taken away immediately (even if, afterward, we see the little '-' sign appear above the combat with the strength loss).

If that IS a change that was made, what was the thought behind it? I am sure that if I look at it in the correct context, it may make sense to me. Right now, it just seems disconcerting to me.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I also noted this, we know the result in advance, there is no surprise that in the end of the fight
It’s like at school when you return a school assignment and you know the note in advance, it’s no longer worth rereading the copy :(

I believe there's been a combat prediction from day one.
But it should not take into account hidden AT-support for example.
Do you mean that the predictions now are absolute?

No, during a fight, the final result, that is to say the strength of the units after the fight, appears first and then comes the animation of the fight

Hello Erik,
I am not saying that the prediction is absolute, at least I have not noticed that.. I take it, by prediction, you mean the prediction that is given when you mouse over the enemy unit? No, what I am saying is that when you commit to a combat by clicking on the enemy unit, the strength points for each unit are immediately decremented and THEN you hear the gunfire sounds and the animation is displayed.

This, of course, is, by no means, a 'game breaking flaw', but it just doesnt seem to fit right.

Yes, actually decrementing unit strength BEFORE combat and it should be AFTER combat :!:

Try unchecking the "instantly show strength loss..." box under options/preferences.

This option is not (and has never been) checked:

I did some tests and could not reproduce the prob. Losses were subtracted only after combat was actually initiated.

Does anybody have a savegame with this happening?

Also was it happening after a fresh game-start or reload, or was there laggy gameplay around this?

edit: also, if you had it, which version/platform was it.

Thank you, GabeKnight, for that info. I was just playing a game, and I changed that setting mid-game, and the points are being decremented AFTER the combat takes place. I will try my next game with that setting on from the outset and see what happens. I didnt even know that setting was there (and I should have checked before posting here!!) That is an interesting setting to have.

I prefer it toggled to on, it's just nice to know immediately. I also have the animation speed cranked all the way up.
