FoG Wiki Status Update

Well, I've just (I think) finished the basic content and structure for all the armies in the first 7 books, so thats Rise of Rome, Immortal Fire, Storm of Arrows, Decline & Fall, Eternal Empire, Swords & Scimitars and Legions Triumphant all set up at a baseline level.... if only Slitherine would stop printing the damn books so quickly!

The site is online here

http://www.madaxeman.com/wiki2/tiki-index.php

Every army now has its own page, a bit of history to expand on whats in the list books, 15mm manufacturers listings for that army, details of the permitted allies, a list of available relevant books, links to external relevant sites, a search of whats on eBay right now that might work for the army, some of the tournament results, a poll so you can vote on how good it is, and possibly "how to use this army" notes and army lists as well.

Or, put another way, there's now enough content that either its now obvious where on each page you'd add something ne into it, and there's almost certainly something you can correct, expand upon or clarify as well on at least one of the pages in there.. :wink:

A big thanks to the 50+ users who have registered and contributed something so far - please keep adding in bits, all is appreciated, and anything you do add or correct is definately going to be seen - the Wiki has had 13,854 page views from 3,585 unique visitors in the last 30 days alone (according to the tracking software thingy).

The survey running on the site says people most want to see army usage advice, and also army lists. Its very easy to just cut and paste army lists into the wiki from most of the army builder spreadsheets out there, and the Wiki automatically sorts out the formatting by magic - although adding in an extra column that puts a * at the start of each line of your list before pasting it in is a good idea to help with formatting if you do.

phew... off to work on the rest now...

I second that Tim. All you need to do now is apply for the unpaid job at Slitherine to run the FoG pages. You can then interlink both sites and never a dull, or is that free, moment

Amazing resource Tim.

Have just put a view votes in myself.

Another vote angle that might be useful might be:

Ideal newbie army
Suitable for learners
Mainstream army
One for the experts

Might help newcomers pick a good army. I can definitely categorie my armies along those 4 dimensions. e.g. Chrisitna Nubian I see as a voltile results in your current vote system and one for the experts in the above. My Spartans are solid in most curcumstances and ideal newbie army.

Might give an added twist that is useful.

I am grateful for Tim for putting so much work into it, and his very vivid battle reports are great content (someday I'll master editing digital images).

Aye, it would be useful. The scheme I developed below includes a somewhat different and narrower rating on learning curve with a rating number intended to pair with the versatility letter rating. The implication is that it's just a matter of time for anyone to learn an army in the first 3 levels but expertise is needed to master (but not necessarily to play OK) for the 4th level. I tuned the questions so I'd expect most armies to be placed in the middle 2 categories, there having to be something substantive the responding player is thinking about to call them very hard or easy.

There is also a rating for allies, but Tim found the website software won't allow multiple polls on a single page. Any input on those needs to go in the text for now.

LEARNING CURVE: This addresses how difficult the army is to play well - how long and hard is the learning curve to using it effectively and using it to its potential, however limited? Simpler armies tend to be faster.

Learning to handle it is
4= Very hard, takes an expert to master
3= Hard, takes time to learn
2= Accessible
1= Easy and fast

ALLIES USEFULNESS: Feel free to add comments to the army page about allied contingents. Each army can be given a rating as to the overall usefulness of its choice of allies:

5 = valuable or must have
4 = good synergy
3 = offers troop variety
2 = rarely useful troops
1 = more of the same
0 = none

Yep, if I could run multiple polls on each page it would be even better, but the wiki software (or perhaps my understanding of how to use it!) isn't that clever :oops:

Anyways, hopefully its easy enough to add something into the "Using this army in FoG" section of any of the pages to say whether its easy to use or not and what the issues for a learner are likley to be.

ps - have resisted the urge to profusely thank MikeK for all his input, or we risk getting into a spiral of self congratulation :wink: - especially on a message board thats already so unfeasibly civillized I keep expecting to see new topics titled "I love little ponies" and "Adding attractive floral aromas to flower beds in your Medieval baggage"...!

Great site Tim.

One small problem. When I click on the Parthian army link I always get an error message, and a request to log-in. I have never noticed this problem with any other army.

And you are obviously one of those responsible for the loving atmosphere as there were no asteristks in my original Tim.
