Where can I find the explanation of these options and how they will affect game play? The game manual nevers mentions them.

The options should all be tooltipped, or self-explanatory. Which are you unsure about?

We're mostly concerned about "AI: Using Standard". Does that mean the AI would be substantially better if it were using "Advanced"? We thought that concept was handled by the 3 levels of difficulty that are normally available. We notice that this choice does NOT appear in the Advanced Options in BA2. Is there a reason for that? -

We made some changes and improvements to the AI for BA after release, but wanted to allow players to keep playing the original as desired. The advanced AI will spend longer thinking, and likely more reactive to new threats. It will likely make more separate moves, extending turn times. Hence you can choose how you want the AI to play.

The AI for BA2 was rewritten somewhat, so did not need the same options.
