Big Jumbos Die Hard

Help! I am relatively new to Legion Arena and in first campaign as Roman. I have just met the elephants for the first time. I know that Scipio cut the beast's hamstrings but it seems my infantry aren't listening. Just how do I stop these beasts - I destroy all their infantry and cavalry but cannot touch them on any ground. Any advice guys?!

First, archers are fairly good, if your archers are at a decent level.

Heavy infantry with a high attack and damage are devestating vs. Jumbo units.

A flanked elephant is a dead elephant.

This thread is a fairly old one, but it should have the rest of the info.

Thanks again for the help. Cauis Guido maximus and his men are now living well on elephant meat. The last time I fought elefants I was manning a T-34 outside of Kharkov! :P

Not one of MY Elefants, at least! I used a pair of them to very good effect in the venerable old game of Close Combat III about a month ago. Funny how those particular carnivorous ones seemed to eat T-34s for breakfast. I REALLY hated the beasts when I ran the other side of the campaign.

It seems most of german army's armor vehicles are named after animals.

Roman empire 's legions never tred into Moscow. Only Naploeon did. Though he lost his empire.
Well people say there was no Moscow in roman era. So a bit funny, though I guess there could be somekind of prehistoric sites, perhaps.

Supposedly, the later Byzantine Empire's Varangian Guard was recruited from the area around Moscow. The Vikings (the "Russ") didn't conquer and rule the area until around the end of the Roman Empire, so there wasn't much in the way of an organized nation in that region before that time, although there were numerous small villages. Considering that the Poles actually took and held Moscow for a few years, setting up a "puppet" government until the Russians revolted and re-formed their own kingdom, it wasn't exactly a world power even into the Middle Ages.

Coincidentally, the two coldest documented winters in Russian history were: the year that Napoleon invaded, and the year that Hitler invaded. Somebody over there must have a secret "world thermostat control" or something.

Named after animals? Let's see: Brumbar (brown bear), Hummel (bee), Wespe (wasp), Luchs (lynx), Maus (mouse), Wirbelwind (whirlwind - nope, definitely not an animal), etc. Yes, most, but not all.

True, but not complete. Some were from modern Russia (specially in the early ages of the Varangian Guard), others from Scandinavia, England or Normandy. They were a lot of normans in the Varangian Guard (maybe from South Italy?). Ironically, they were more loyal to their king than the king's own greek vassals...see Manzikert or however it's spelled.

Most of regular Byzantine army (the Varangian guard was involved in only a few battles, mostly in civil wars) was based on mercenaries. Lots of turks and archers from bulgaria...their enemies, in fact...I wonder how they (byzantines or eastern romans) managed to last until 1453...

EDIT. BTW, against dumbos I use mainly skirmisher with anti-elephant skill in various grades, but I could stop them with heavy infantry too (though it is normally needed somewhere else)

The term "Byzantine" is often used to refer to convoluted politics and espionage, which is how they kept intact. Thet did an amazing job of playing the various powers off against each other, assassinating those leaders who were against them, and hiring the various barbarian tribes to do their dirty-work.

I use archers to shoot up incoming elephants, and then double-team the survivors with heavy infantry from two sides. No matter which one they face, the other will hit them in the flank or rear.

Funny didnt see this mentioned, but does anyone use the advanced formation Square? I Simply put my two best archers on the elephants and place two good heavy infantry in front of them in Square formation and fagettabout it... I focus on destroying the rest of the army. If the units by some mischance are having a problem I simply add a cav charge to thier rear or more missle fire or both.

In the larger maps I have destroyed them with archers only by simply moving the archers every now and then since the Jumbos are so slow.
