I'm a noob in every possible way, so I have a question about the Atlantic-side "portal" to the Red Sea. It worked the first time I used it, but now my transports cant enter that hex and transport. Is this because the Axis is now in control of Egypt or is there something else that "deactivates" it?

When you lose Port Said only the Axis player can use the Atlantic loop. That means you MUST use the sea lane to move to the Red Sea or the Persian Gulf.
